Every book ought to have a title, and I knew it like everybody else. What I did not know was that finding a title would turn out to be a stupendous job. How insuperbly difficult the seemingly simple task of thinking up the title of a book would be, I realized first when I had just finished making a list of my hitherto published articles. The topics of these articles seemed, to my dismay, to defy any attempt of a rational arrangement.

These include great names in the world of Letters and in the realm of Spirit-great writers and thinkers on the one hand, and great sages and saints on the other. I mention a few to illustrate this somewhat bewildering range and variety of subjects: The Bhagavadgita and T S Eliot, Sri Ramakrishna and Bertrand Russell, Swami Vivekananda and Arnold Toynbee, Anandamayee Ma and Marcel Proust, Vedanta and Romain Rolland. I have put these names in pairs not to suggest any possible relation but to bring out the embarrassing absence of any.

Contents

India is Different (1974-75)
Hinduism and Romain Rolland (1966)
Swamiji’s Last Letters (1965)
Swami Vivekananda’s Views on Religion (1992)
Swami Vivekananda’s Vision of Modern India (1973)
The Relevance of Sri Ramakrishna for Modern Man (1979)
Sri Ramakrishna and The Modern Age (1997)
The Old and The New in the Philosophy of Sri Aurobindo (1996)
Sree Sree Anandamayee Ma and The Great Tradition (1996)
Sree Sree Anandamayee MA and the Spiritual Heritage of Ancient India (1997)
Sree Sree Anandamayee MA’s Contributions to the Spiritual Heritage of India (1996)
Bertrand Russell (1962)
Bertrand Russell-Homage To a Great Man (1972)
Russell’s Conception of the Good Life (1972)
Happiness for Modern Man in the eyes of Bertrand Russell (1972)
Hinduism and Arnold Toynbee (1976)
Arnold Toynbee and Western Civilization (1974)
Toynbee’s Conception of a True Scholar (1969)
Arnold Toynbee on religion (1975)
The Stages of Spiritual Progress in the Gita (1977)
The Concept of Samatva in the Bhagavad Gita (2001)
The Concept of Yoga in The Bhagavad Gita (1977)
Bhakti: The Vedantic Way Par Excellence (1980)
Vaishnavism (1997)
Dvaitadvaita Siddhanta of Sri Sri Nimbarkacarya (1998)
Marcel Proust (1972)
Limitations of Purely Literary Culture (1972)
The Poetry of Shakespeare-How it strikes an Indian Admirer (1964)
Reading a Book Too early or Too Late (1963)
T S Eliot-A Great Critic (1967)
T S Eliot on Shakespeare (1966)
Sanskrit and National Integration (1961)
English and Tagore (1972)
