But the opinions of these scholars are so varied that it is very difficult to have any kind of consensus-though everyone, perhaps, feels the urgency of exploring this mystery. The Institute presented an international seminar on the subject Philosophy and Science-an Exploratory Approach to Consciousness on 8 and 9 February 2002.

The seminar was inaugurated by Swami Ranganathananda, President of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, and Prof Karl H Pribram, Professor Emeritus, Standford University, gave the keynote address of the inaugural session. This was followed by four academic sessions on two days and the valedictory session. The main feature of the valedictory session was a panel discussion among five scholars with Prof J N Mohanty of Temple University, Philadelphia, as the co-coordinator. In all, twenty-six scholars from different parts of India as also from outside the country participated. In the academic sessions, each scholar presented 20-minute paper, followed by a discussion for another 25 minutes. This volume contains the papers presented by the participants in the seminar, along with salient portions of the questions-and –answer sessions.

Contents

PUBLISHER’S NOTE

INAUGURAL SESSION

Welcome Address
SWAMI PRABHANANDA

Address of Benediction
SRIMAT SWAMI RANGANATHANANDAJI MAHARAJ

Philosophy and Science
SWAMI SMARANANANDA

Keynote Address
KARL H PRIBRAM

Chairman’s Address
M V S VALIATHAN

Vote of Thanks
A K SHARMA

FIRST ACADEMIC SESSION

Science and Consciousness
B V SREEKANTAN

Consciousness-Mundane and Transcendental
J N MOHANTY

Understanding Matter and Myth of Consciousness
J GHOSH

SECOND ACADEMIC SESSION
Sheaf Theoretic Foundations of Ontology
(Categorical Interpretation of Perennial Philosophy)
GORO KATO

Explaining consciousness-An alternative Philosophical Perspective
P K MUKHOPADHYAY

Theory of Experiential Continuum
NAVJYOTI SINGH

Consciousness-A Psychological Approach
ARABINDA BASU

THIRD ACADEMIC SESSION

The Anthropoid Principle-Life, Cosmos and Consciousness
G J LARSON

An Evolutionary Approach to Consciousness
V NANJUNDIAH

Consciousness in Indian Philosophical

Thought with special reference to the Advaita, Saiva School of Kashmir
DEBABRATA SEN SHARMA

Quantum Information and levels of Consciousness
SISIR ROY

FOURTH ACADEMIC SESSION

Consciousness-Mental States and Mind-A Comparative Study
J L SHAW

Science and Philosophy-An Approach to Consciousness
SWAMI JITATMANANDA

The Pentaune and the Nanoune
Models for the Mechanics of Nature and Consciousness are suggested
A K MUKHOPADHYAY

Intuition and looking for the truth about the world
MILOS LOKAJICEK

VALEDICTORY SESSION

Welcome Address
SWAMI PRABHANANDA

Monistic Indian Perennial Philosophies and Consciousness
MENAS KAFATOS

Valedictory Address
ASIS DATTA

Vote of Thanks
SAROJ GHOSE

APPENDIX
